Nurburgring 1975. Niki Lauda has just broken the record by going round the Ring in under seven minutes. This is the old Ring: 22.8 kilometres, 89 left-handers, 85 right-handers. Lauda took 6 minutes and 58.6 seconds; average speed 196.383 km/h.When Lauda climbs out of his Ferrari, he is introduced to the writer Peter Handke.
'Have you been to a race before?' asks Lauda.
'Not at all, I don't even have my driver's licence,' answers Handke.
The driver shows the writer around the pits, explaining the special atmosphere of the circuit and telling him about his experiences and all the things that go with one of these races. Finally he asks:
'And what, do you think, is the source of this tremendous fascination for car racing?'
The writer clicks his pen. 'These people are all in search of a lost religion.'

Indeed, Handke still doesn't have a driver's license, because his eyesight is impaired by occasional color blindness. So we get great descriptions of bus rides from him, also a lot of friends with cars have given him long rides especially during his trips through Yugoslavia during the Balkan wars.
Here are some links to Handke sites.
