As much as I try to understand it, I still find it hard to believe that Rally New Zealand is such a coveted event. Loved by crews, drivers, journalists and photographers.
Martin Holmes does a beautiful job of conveying the sense of nostalgia and history of the event and also explaining why it is so loved. (EDIT: Goddamn link, the magazine changes each week, don't know how to get back-issues)
Crews love it. As I now remember from last night. Another of my misconceptions was that every international rally had awesome after rally parties and weeks of pretty much no sleep during to going out on the town, found out that this is wrong - not every rally has the same atmosphere. And ours is one of the best.
As much as this helps me to try and understand the international perspective, I still want to get out there and experience all the other WRC events for myself.
No matter how good the things are that are right in front of you, you will always want to see if there is anything better out there. What is in front of you is too easy - the chase is half the fun!
